Anyone wanting to make a difference in their community has the chance to join Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire as a Volunteer Generalist Adviser.
The advice charity – which is helping record numbers of people with cost-of-living-related problems – is looking to take on 10 Volunteer Generalist Advisers.
The new cohort will start training in January and will soon after be helping those who come to the charity for advice.
It is an exciting time to join the team as this latest group will hopefully be the first to start in the charity’s new premises in Badminton Court, Station Road – as the move is now imminent.
Generalist Advisers are essential to what the charity does. Whether meeting clients face-to-face at drop-ins or taking calls via the local Adviceline, Generalist Advisers help over a huge range of themes.
These can include (but are not limited to) benefits, debt, housing, energy, employment and relationship breakdown.
Volunteer Generalist Adviser training
Volunteers will get full training and support from the charity’s Lead Supervisor and Training Officer Emmanuelle Claverie and will get to be part of an amazing team of dedicated Advisers who give their time each week to help people in need in the community.
The charity is particularly keen to encourage applications from people with a diverse range of backgrounds. This is especially the case for people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds who are currently under-represented.
Emmanuelle said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to not only use your existing skills to help people in the local community but also develop new ones such as communication skills, research abilities and record-keeping. These are all skills that are very much in-demand by employers.
“It also involves in-depth training around a range of areas – issues that most people will come across at some point in their lives. You will also be part of a really friendly and supportive team with a very worthwhile charity.”
Applicants should be IT competent and able to commit to two sessions per week for at least two years.
Training will be held over a full day – probably a Wednesday – each week starting in January 2025. There will be additional training time when new recruits can observe experienced Advisers.
There will be opportunities to help out for a few sessions prior to training starting so that applicants can check the role is right for them.
To apply, please email Finance and Admin Manager Amanda Wood at bureau@sgloscab.cabnet.org.uk to ask for an application form.
